With the ever-growing demand for digital advertising, smart cities and commercial displays, outdoor LED displays are evolving towards multi-scenario, intelligent digital displays. From motorway billboards and shopping centers to sports stadiums, taxis and mobile LED trucks, the scope of outdoor LED display applications continues to expand.
What is an outdoor LED display?
An outdoor LED display is a large-scale digital display device that utilizes light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to display images, videos and text content, and is primarily designed for outdoor environments. Compared to indoor LED displays, outdoor products must withstand environmental factors such as direct sunlight, rain, dust, temperature fluctuations and prolonged operation.
What parameters should be considered when selecting an outdoor LED display?
Firstly, brightness and display quality. As ambient light levels in outdoor environments vary significantly, the screen must possess sufficient brightness whilst also ensuring accurate colour reproduction, contrast and wide viewing angles to guarantee optimal viewing quality at all times of day.
Secondly, pixel pitch. This should be selected based on the actual installation location and viewing distance.
Refresh rate is also a key consideration. A high refresh rate minimizes motion blur in fast-moving images and reduces the likelihood of noticeable moiré patterns when photographing the LED screen with a mobile phone or camera.
Furthermore, outdoor LED displays typically require a high IP protection rating. For example, an IP65 rating provides the screen with good dust and water resistance, helping it to withstand outdoor conditions such as rain and dust.
Outdoor LED displays are expanding into more application scenarios
Outdoor LED rental screens are primarily used at music festivals, sporting events, celebrations, performances and large-scale events, where they can be utilized for live broadcasts, score displays, video replays and on-site information dissemination.
Outdoor LED advertising screens are primarily located in commercial plazas, shopping centres, pedestrianized streets and along urban roads, where they enhance the visibility of advertising content through dynamic videos and images.
Furthermore, LED taxi screens and mobile LED truck screens have further expanded the reach of outdoor digital advertising. Compared to fixed-installation advertising screens, these mobile display devices can travel to different areas as the vehicles move, offering advertisers a more flexible means of communication.
Outdoor LED displays offer greater flexibility in control methods
In terms of content management, outdoor LED displays currently utilize two main control methods: asynchronous and synchronous control.
Asynchronous control is better suited to projects requiring long-term operation, such as advertising screens. Users can remotely upload and manage playback content via a cloud platform, and update it according to a pre-set playback schedule.
Synchronous control is better suited to real-time display scenarios such as performances, sporting events and other activities. Once a computer is connected to the LED display control system, the images played on the computer can be displayed synchronously on the large screen.
In 2026, outdoor LED displays will place greater emphasis on overall performance. As demand for outdoor digital displays continues to grow, market requirements for LED displays are no longer limited to simply "being able to display". High-definition display, stable operation, energy efficiency, protection, remote management and convenient maintenance will become key considerations in project selection.
