MicroLED technology is often touted as the future of display technology with impressive features and potential advantages over current technologies such as OLED and LCD. But is MicroLED truly the best?
Advantages of MicroLED: There are a number of big pros to MicroLED displays. First of all, they are capable of really good brightness and contrast levels. Since every pixel of a MicroLED display is self-emissive, it helps provide true black levels with very high contrast ratios. This is exactly how OLEDs would perform, though MicroLEDs are able to hit even higher peak brightness levels without such an OLED-specific problem as the risk of burn-in.
Another important benefit is that it allows energy efficiency. Since microLEDs do not use the backlight used in traditional LED and OLED screens, the amount of power employed is kept lower than usual. In turn, this enables better battery life for portable devices and reduced energy consumption for larger displays.
Besides, MicroLED is a technology that provides great color accuracy and a large color gamut, producing vivid and accurate images. In addition, the response time is extremely short, making it suitable for applications where image changes occur frequently, such as gaming and virtual reality.
Challenges and Limitations: Notwithstanding the several advantages that are associated with this technology, there are a number of challenges ahead that the Micromax brand of MicroLED has to contend with. Making displays with MicroLED is relatively complicated and expensive mainly due to the careful placement of millions of small LEDs required. This complexity has so far limited the mass production and wide acceptance of MicroLED displays.
Whereas MicroLEDs are promising in performance terms, current consumer products remain few and far between. Due to the high production cost, MicroLED displays can be found only in premium devices and large-scaled applications such as digital signage at present.
Though MicroLED technology holds, perhaps, some of the most enviable display characteristics in present displays, such as remarkable brightness, contrast, energy efficiency, and durability, whether it is the best overall, considering varied factors and applications on the ground, may be negative. At the very moment that production techniques continue to improve and drop in price, MicroLED may create another dominant display technology; right now, it is quite costly to be the best in all applications.
